The Yun House isn’t your usual fenced out boutique hotel. Located in Yangshuo, in South-Eastern China, the 3000 square meter estate was imagined as an integral part of its breathtaking surroundings. It took nine years of planning and four years of construction to create this impeccably designed venue, fusing together traditional architecture and contemporary aesthetic.
However, the true heart of Yun House is the focus on creating a modern authentic experience to showcase local culture. There are no barriers or high walls between local life and the guests. Owner Qu Ming and architects Ares Partners decided to preserve parts of the area they were converting, including keeping the original structure of the houses intact.
Steel frames and glass pivot doors contrast with traditional, locally sourced rough-cut stone blocks and terra cotta roof tiles. Some of the tables and doors are upcycled from the surrounding village, adding on to the sense of continuity around which the residence was envisioned. Every element was designed to articulate with one another.
“Upon meeting Qu Ming, you instantly get a feel for why this place is so special.” Explains Mandy from KAE Collective. “He’s the one putting together the experience, building brick walls, picking fruits to make delicious jams for his guests, collecting plants from the mountain to personally add to the atmosphere of his hotel. There is an exceptional sense of personalization and warmth that is not found at other hotels.”
The exquisite home inspired dishes served are made from locally sourced ingredients, so that guests feel every aspect of the space they reside in. From the water used for cooking to the vegetables farmed in nearby villages, a special effort is made to ensure that travelers get a taste of what the local cuisine has to offer. Qu Ming also organizes hikes to the river where he cooks for guests over campfire, enabling them to obtain something that cannot be bought: tranquility.
The Yun House represents what we admire the most in a business: being conscious that every single element including elegant design, considered materials and a personal service has to come together to create a characteristic experience.
